Love Emanating from God’s Marvelous Ducks
Could it be that there are important stories all around us, stories that point us to God? I once saw a male mallard duck, with his irridescent green head, wandering on the side of a major roadway, as if in a daze. Upon inspection, I noticed, to my horror, that his mate, a female mallard duck, lay dead in the roadway. The poor green-headed fellow was in a daze, in shock, and he dutifully did his best to stand by his fallen lover’s side, in spite of the fact that cars mercilessly rolled by. He stayed for a long time, a very long time, and it was the end of a love affair, right there on the side of the street. I think it’s fair to say that he was a good mate, and that his loyalty and love are a banner to people who saw (or heard of) his most poignant story. Just as the stork knows her appointed seasons (Jeremiah 8), those two mallard ducks lived out their love story with brilliance and poignancy. In their worst hour, their love shone through like a strobe light to those who would stop and see. What a magnificent pair they were! Some might say that little green-headed fellow was pathetic, wandering around only inches from the tires of merciless cars, but I would say that he was a hero who clung to his lover and to the love of his life. A love story right there on the side of the street, amidst a cruel scene. (What other Love Story shone like a strobe light amidst a cruel scene on a hill called Calvary those many years ago?)
