Little Black Chihuahua

I was driving down the street just a’minding my business, purposing to go around the block because I wanted to skip a too-full barbershop and cut back to another emptier barbershop nearby. On the surface, it seemed there was little chance of a big creation moment around the corner. But lo and behold, as I set my eyes on an alley that would take me in the direction of the next barbershop, I noticed the alley-way was full of activity, so I slowed down to a crawl for safety sake. Wouldn’t you know—a little black chihuahua was moseying over to a pole at the mouth of the alley to take a pee. He had skinny little legs that nevertheless carried him along eminently well, giving him a trot and a hop and a skip that far surpassed the energy emanations of most in the general vicinity. His person (a.k.a. “master”) was entranced by the cell phone or some such gizmo in her hand and ambled almost in a foglike state down the alley, turning only as she reached a door that opened onto the alley—she turned to check if her dog was still there, and sure enough, he had kept up his part of the bargain and was “hop-hoppeting” along as only a little black chihuahua can.

He seemed almost lighter than air, probably weighing less than a 5-pound peanut butter jar and for sure smaller than most cats, and when his skinny little legs got the command from his brain he trotted along without great speed but with excellent determination. He was a joy to behold because he trotted one of the best trots, exuded some of the best vibes, and was totally in the moment. He didn’t stop to strike a pose or reflect on the meaning of life after his pee; instead, he got right on with the business of attending to his very distracted person. He was a little miracle of God’s creation, perhaps a sly reminder that we’re all pretty small in the larger scheme of things, and that we all should be attending to our Master’s business. Jesus is the Master Artist, and when he made the earliest wolf/dog pairs He made them with a view towards the inevitable “reproducing after their own kind” so that, among other things, wolves would thin out deer herds and this little black chihuahua would brighten up the landscape of an unrenowned logging town in Washington. Praise Jesus for little black chihuahuas!
